I'm an art teacher, which means that the classroom teachers are responsible for picking up their students from my class. One grade of teachers knows my lunch is right after their class and see that as an invitation to take a few extra minutes because I don't teach a class directly after it. There is one teacher who is always on time. It means a lot to me. Since it is the end of the school year I made sure to write her a nice card explaining how much I appreciated it and how her effort didn't go unnoticed.

The latest: letting my son's ex-girlfriend (they parted acrimoniously) stay with us for about a week, after she lost her internship and before she could organize herself to get back to Texas. We treated her like a daughter and had a great time. Meanwhile, my two young-adult children were far away.

I love the idea of poking holes in stereotypes in a visual way. In this polarized society, it's important to see each other as individuals.

I came to the aid of an elderly woman, whom had fallen down on the sidewalk. I had tissues in my car, so I ran and got the box to help the woman control her bloody nose. Fortunately there was a police officer on duty around the corner from her fall, so I ran over to him, and he called 911 for us. I waited with the woman and the police man until the ambulance arrived and she was being medically treated. She was very frightened, so it calmed her, for me to stay with her and console her. She ended up being just fine :-)

I give to others to make sure they are happy, especially my baby sister. When I saved up $6 to spend, I couldn't just spend it all on myself, so I bought her a butterfly net.

(Lincoln's Mom, Katrina): Lincoln is the most caring and empathetic person I know. If anyone epitomizes the definition of being "not evil," it is him. He's an inspiration.

I'm a big believer in everything happens for a reason. Happy people make me happy. I make it my goal everyday to put a smile on whoever is around me. The best medicine for any issue is just to have a laugh or even just put a smile on. I figure it can work for those around me, too. I try and get involved with as much as possible, especially with volunteering. I'll always love going to the animal shelter and walking all the dogs with my best friend. I love volunteering at events at my school as well.
